Shackles, a freewrite
I would not be surprised to learn that many people down at village hall in this hillbilly town hate my guts.
I protested. Oh yes I did. The agenda for the evening's bimonthly board meeting listed the announcement of an award received, compliments of the village treasurer, of 50,000 dollars for something called NYS Strengthening Essential Cybersecurity for Utilities and Resiliency, made nice and warm and fuzzy by the acronym SECURE. What could go wrong, right?
I looked into it before the meeting.
Now, I have often warned them that government handouts, called grants and awards, come with strings attached. Stuff you have to do that you would not have to do if you didn't take the dang money in the first place. Do they listen to me? No they do not. They think I'm whacked.
I got busy looking up this award's strings. I found whole bunches of stuff, onerous stuff, that the officials of this village will have to do in perpetuity if they take this money. I showed them the mush shorter list of stuff they will be required by law to do if they don't take the money.
The treasurer, who was very proud of herself for securing the grant/award, glared at me.
"Where did you find all this?" one of the board members asked.
"I did an AI query."
Maybe AI isn't so bad after all.

I used eggtimer and wrote madly for five minutes. After the timer went off, I proofread without making content changes. This is a true story.
I appear to be on a mission to stop my local government officials from tightening the shackles already on their wrists, and on those of the residents of this very fine little village, by gratefully accepting every single dime any government anywhere wants to hand out to us. This particular grant will force us to expose our utilities, until now independent and inexpensive, to control by the state government, under the guise of protecting us from cyber attack. What a load of crock. What we need protection from these days is our state government. This particular law is the very first of its kind in the nation, no less. Watch out for protection coming for you, wherever you are.

You're absolutely right. It's not government protection we need but protection from government. Give them nothing and take nothing from them.
The notion here is that any money from the government is good money. That small towns need the funds, even if it means making people back into their parking spots on Main Street. They apply for, and receive (is this not a clue that it's all BS?), every grant they find out about. The town was granted 4.5 MILLION DOLLARS for "revitalization" (this is a very vibrant little town, no government revitalization needed) soon after I moved here. The Democrats were drooling with love for the Democratic governorm who has amply demonstrated that she is a certifiable nut job, starting with her first years in office during the covid con (her predecessor had to resign for womaninzing and Democrats hate that). I'm ranting. I'm going to rant on. Umpteen smaller businesses applied for sub-grants of the 4.5 million dollar grant to get their acts even better together. A few of them got grants. We are now, nearly five years later, watching the village board jump through hoops trying to get (by spending it on whatever the state tells them they have to spend it on) the remaining funds, which by my estimate is at least 3 million dollars. They had to agree to register most of the idyllic village (including my house) as Landmark real estate. My alarm bells went off!! MY HOUSE HAS TO BE REGISTERED WITH THE STATE?! No one else could see the problem with that. They could only see that they would receive a kick back of some percentage of any money they spent on fixing up their homes, after they've jumped through a few seemingly minor hoops, involvew with registering, of course. Registering the work they have done on the inside of their homes with the state! The funds are not for only the outside like most Landmark's regulations. No siree, we gotta tell them what fixes we are doing on our kitchens to get the money. Better just hope they are not in cahoots with appraisers, or your real estate taxes will shoot up. I look around me and I see idiots everywhere.

Why thank you! I don't know what comes over me at those meetings. I stand and deliver. It's fun. I hope the treasurer doesn't quit though. Unintentionally, because I really know nothing about who does what or why down there, most of my criticisms have landed on her. The clerk quit 7 months ago, and kind of the same sitch existed then - most of my concerns, unknowingly, had something to do with her duties, such as publishing agendas before the meetings. The only reason I could do the above at all is because the new clerk has been getting those agendas published in time. I'm thinking out loud here.
I do the first part, when necessary, but I hate doing it :) I don't like the attention, but when something has to be said, it has to be said! First of all many people don't understand the issue. And then, many people are loathe to receive criticism that might follow. So if you understand the problem, and you are articulate then do you civic duty. There's really no choice, because you have to live with the consequences if you don't.
BTW, my granddaughter went to Nashville (I believe you said you bought a home there). She loved it. She said Nashville has become a go-to place for college seniors. Boy, am I out of touch. I thought Nashville was all country music and Nascar.
Dwontown Nashville is the go to place for brides-to-be, college seniors and all that kind of riff raff. I don't go downtown if I can help it. The rest of the city, though, is where the best music and food are. It's a lovely town. It will be a relief to get out of this hillbilly town, as much as I love it, for a few months every year.
I really love giving my village board my two cents. I wish more people would show up to give theirs. Then the 'trustees' would be more likely to be good at their jobs.

It's cool that you are involved at the local level. That's where the citizens have the most influence, I think. In an ideal world, at least in my mind, local government will be the primary government, in a decentralized, global society.
Ideally, yes. But what is happening with these grants is that the state is gaining more and more control over our small, independent, municipalities. The board thinks I am nuts for asking them to stop taking state money. I hope I showed at least of few of them how dangerous that can be at this last meeting. They will have to provide annual detailed reports about our lovely little independent water, electric and garbage services in perpetuity after taking this last grant. I love it here, but I am considering moving to a town that is less eager to be shackled by state-level regulations.
It seems the trick is to figure out another source of funding. Some other way to organize governmental/societal structure. I still think blockchain and communities like Hive could provide an alternative ... but I'm not sure anyone sees the nuts and bolts of exactly how that would come together. ... The water well project using Hive in Ghana might provide a model though. Not sure if that is still going on.
Hm. I don't know anything about that program. I do know we have been well trained in only using company(fiat) money for everything, and can't see outside that paradigm.
It's the same here. It seems there are grants for everything. When we got our solar installed and had our well upgraded, the providers couldn't believe we weren't applying for the government grants.
Good for you! When they are kicked out of their homes because they hadn't filed a report on time, you will still be there. Or will you? Where have you been for two weeks?
The board members keep complaining about this or that administrative (reporting) task they have to do, that they don't know why they have to do it but feel they have no choice. There's even a county-wide agency that gets to give out village tax exemptions (for solar and wind power related businesses) without discussing it with the village! I tell them they probably took a grant for something years ago that had that requirement attached.
My goal is to stop them from blindly taking money from the government! They spend ZERO time researching what the strings are. This business really has me fearing to live here. I hope Tennessee is better. I doubt it. Few refuse 'free' money.
