Moore Air Base Reactivates to Combat New World Screwworm Eradication
The June 13, 2025 issue of Progress Times reports that Moore Air Base, located northwest of Mission, Texas will reactivate a USDA program to study and control new world screwworm (NWS), which is a flesh eating pest that primarily affects cattle. NWS has seen a resurgence in Mexican cattle and is slowly making its way back to the USA.
NWS was once present in the US until the USDA implemented a program to eradicate it by breeding infertile varieties that would mate with fertile NWS with no reproductive result. Representative Monica de la Cruz has introduced a bill to reactivate the program at Moore Air Base.

Moore Air Base was once used to train US Air Force pilots. The base has had several other uses over the years, currently serving as an air base for US Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs.
Moore Air Base is not a well-known base outside of the local community. However, it has an interesting history as an air base and also its other uses, such as a POW camp during World War II.
