Steemit.chat Being Updated
Update5: And we're back. Let's never do that again.
Update4: Brought down to adjust some configs for multi-threading.
Update3: The performance issues are being worked on.
Update2: 4.3 GB/6.7 GB (65.2%) of messages restored. Folks have had a lot to say haha.
Update: If steemit.chat didn't exist would it move the conversation to steemit.com? Would that be good or bad? Discuss.
Sorry for the down time folks. I was made aware of a security vulnerability for older versions of Rocket Chat (we were on 0.56). The only solution was to update version which requires a database conversion. We're going to skip a bunch of versions to 0.60.0 which comes with its own issues.

Currently mobile reactions aren't working. Hopefully that'll be resolved in an upcoming release.
The new version has a lot of performance optimizations but requires a different configuration than the current setup we've been optimizing over the past year or so. I ask that you please be patient with the admins and moderators while we get things back up to snuff.

Hard to say. The instability is largely caused by DDoS attacks on the service. The strength and frequency correlates almost directly with the market cap of Steem. Though that is just my baseless guess. There are nearly a thousand channels on steemit.chat with, I presume, their own micro ecosystem of poltics and tech savvy folks.
It's an arms race that will never be won or lost.

Anytime you offer a service that's popular there's going to be either competitors or just assholes hammering the server. Unfortunately except for mitigating these there's nothing anyone can do except put in controls.

This just shows how much needed an implented chat / message system in Steemit is ..
It is the second day that I have tried to join the chat, I really hope it will be up and running soon, glad you to see you are actively helping provide a place for us to have after hours discussions. Hope to join soon.

But you are doing an amazing job! Transfers are ok, but even with discord - steem.chat has currently no real alternative.

My answer to the question is: bad. It would be really bad not to have steemit.chat, because it really doesn't have any alternative, even though people use discord. Thank you for doing this, using your precious time so we could have a platform for a nice chat with other steemians. I am fairly new to steemit, but when I first came I didn't know much about steemit, and I've got all my answers on steemit.chat so thank you once more. Have a nice day!

Usually, my eyes and brain can't take a design change within the first hour or so as it is simply not used to it. But this, I really liked.
Just the simple addition of profile pictures next to people's names rather than just the @ sign is really helpful.

I read you are mainly dealing with DDoS instability, but are running directly off Amazon AWS. What kind of DDoS? Have you considered putting the Rocket.Chat instance behind Cloudflare?
Integrating the chat to Steemit interface, why not? Can't wait for it, hopefully an SMT will also be part of it to incentivize those we chat to..just saying, I dont know much about tech stuff. Way to go!

That ended up being what I did. It has really hampered usability for some users but the trade off may be worth it in lack of lag and less spammers/scammers.

You noted this was not supposed to be your life's work, and @deltik (has rocket.chat experience) and I would be keen to get involved. INFORMING THE MASSES - A short list of some of the abuses against @Noganoo by Satanic whales on Steemit.
For those of you who are unaware @Noganoo was sexually abused when he was 5 years old. Bernie Sanders learned this from Fyrstikken whom Noganoo trusted and confided in and then was betrayed and slandered by Fyrstikken whom Noganoo brought to Steemit. Noganoo only requested that Fyrstikken send back the 10 Bitcoins he stole from SatoshiHorizon through his “altcoin investment fund.” Noganoo stood up against Bernie's flag abuse towards SeaBlue which caused the war that you are seeing today. Bernie swore to destroy Noganoo because Noganoo defended the helpless minnows on Steemit. Below are just a few of the terrible insults they have spoken against this Christian man. Please visit @Noganoo's blog and support and encourage him through these demonic attacks as his old friends have forsaken him. Not only do these people verbally attack Noganoo but they antagonize him until he responds in anger, then they sent the FBI to his house for "threatening." Noganoo has requested to all of the whales on steemit directly for them to speak to these 2 fraudsters and tell them to stop. Not a word was said in one year and now he is resorting to further action. The abuse will stop. If you have any information as to the identity or whereabouts of BernieSanders or Pfunk please contact [email protected]. There is a substantial reward and you can remain anonymous. Noganoo is unable to file a restraining order against these 2 until he finds their identity. BernieSanders is a pedophile and should not be rewarded with upvotes on Steemit.
First of all let's go back to before this all started. Noganoo was investigating the fraud and theft of 10s of millions of dollars of rewards by Donkeypong, Gavvet, Sauravrungta, HanshotFirst, Kevinwong, The-Alien, JrCornel, Sweetsssj and Knozaki2015 with their organization called "SteemGuild" where they used the Steemit Co-founder Ned's account to vote for themselves instead of the "minnows" they claimed to be supporting. Go look at all of their current account values and you can see that over 1 year ago Noganoo was right! They paid themselves multi-millions for only a couple months of curating on Steemit. Something the rest of us do for free. You can see that these people and their friends are the only people who have ever attacked Noganoo. They are trying to cover up their theft. If you go back on the blockchain you can see Noganoo's accounts previously supported most of these authors with his thousand bot voters early on in the platforms launch. https://steemd.com/@sweet-banana?page=17 Then Noganoo called out The-Alien for his common use of the word "Motherfucker" in his fiction stories that were upvoted by their "Steemguild" to number one on trending every day to "raise money for the guild." Fact is they stole millions of dollars. This rebuke prevented Noganoo from ever getting an upvote from that guild which controlled over 30% of the voting power on Steemit at the time.

Here is Pfunk 2 years ago violently attacking an article Noganoo wrote about Christianity, Pfunk at the time had no idea Noganoo wrote this! Pfunk is a hater of true Christians but aligns himself with the fake Christians so he can get more witness votes and doesn't lose support. Pfunk proceeded to individually message everyone that upvoted Noganoo and slander him and threaten them with loss of support if they continue to upvote his articles. Pfunk, Berniesanders and Ausbitbank costed Noganoo over 50,000 dollars in losses last year. Ausbitbank attacked Noganoo to impress his witness friends when Noganoo is the one who brought him to Steemit. He brought Noganoo’s reputation from 68 down to zero with stolen Steempower provided by JamesC
