Traces of a devil in Devon

It is an incident, perhaps, happened in February, 1855 in Devon, and the name "traces of the Devil" it has received because many believed as if they are left by a Satan when walks the doubled hoofs on the ground.

In the night from 7 for February 8 in Devon on snow there were strange marks left by hoofs. They were the identical size and settled down in 20–40 cm from each other. At the same time the route which there has passed an unknown was very strange: traces found even on roofs of houses, on walls and on entrances to sewers. At the same time inhabitants haven't noticed anybody who would go on roofs, didn't hear characteristic noise.

However, serious experts just haven't managed to check the strange theory because of the thawed snow. It is considered that animals could leave marks — for example, some species of mice move jumps, leaving kopytopodobny marks. And already national rumor and imagination have united absolutely different traces from all city in one chain and have attributed them to a devil.
