Want to understand what Hallucinations really are?! This video will tell you about Hallucinations and explain it in very simple terms.

WHAT IS THE SCIENCE OF HALLUCINATIONS?

Let's first try to understand what they are! A hallucination is when you see, hear, touch, taste or smell something that really, isn’t there. But it seems very very real! They basically mess with your sense of reality.

And that's just it. It’s not real!
and it’s not under your control!

Interestingly, the most common hallucinations are AUDITORY HALLUCINATIONS or the ones we HEAR,

followed by VISUAL HALLUCINATIONS or one’s we see.

A Hallucination can be associated with any of these MENTAL ILLNESSES like schizophrenia, epilepsy, brain tumors, migraines, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, PTSD and of course while you’re on drugs!

These drugs that specifically cause hallucinations are called Hallucinogens. You may have even heard of some of them!

CANNABIS

MAGIC MUSHROOMS

Their chemical makeup can cause them to bind to different receptors in your brain which are normally meant for SEROTONIN (a neurotransmitter associated with satisfaction) creating very vivid and interesting reactions that make you feel good and change the way you view reality!

But that really is just the way you think things are actually happening!

This explains why people often FEEL REALLY SATISFIED after using hallucinogenic drugs.

WHY DO THEY HAPPEN?

Freudians see hallucinations as outward expressions of what someone really wants or wishes. We tend to fall back on a previous mental framework, filling in gaps in our mind.

Cognitive psychologists believe that they just haven’t been thinking straight.

Biological psychologists are most clear about the causes. These guys have been stimulating specific parts of the brain and feel that hallucinations are a result of deficits due to brain damage or a chemical imbalance.

People with hallucinations have trouble filtering out information, specifically the thalamus which is closely linked to auditory hallucinations.

A doctor is likely to ask you the nature of your hallucinations, what was it like when it first occurred, when does it typically occur, how long have they been present.

HOWEVER, the real cause for hallucinations remains a mystery!
