Using Architecture and Light to attain Spirituality

Hi, fellow architects and designers. This is my first article regarding architecture & design here. Hope you like it!

So this was a conceptual drawing provided to a client for a church to be constructed in Central India. Though the project didnt come into existence there were a few things that I learnt which I would like to share with you.

Starting with the design aspect or language used in the building these are some points that seemed to astonish me and gave a good result in the final aesthetics and feel of the overall design.

  • Raw use of materials/unfinished surfaces
  • Placement of openings and masses in thirds to create a Gothic sense into modern Brutalist architecture
  • Combined use of glass and concrete to create interesting dynamism and highlight certain portions specifically placed in thirds to provide the elevation a balance throughout

  • Use of repitition in the auditorium part which contained maximum number of openings hence creating interesting patterns inside the prayer hall.

  • The openings of the building were flushed inside to add a layer and to act as surfaces which catch light and provide depth.

  • These openings contained stained glass which again caught light and provided a good backdrop to highlight certain areas of the building exteriors as well as interiors.

Here is one another view of the design. Hope you like it!
