Field Notes
No begging or pleading was a sign over the public bar in a pub in Waterloo, just north of Liverpool. This was our office on Saturdays in between runs to see a boat or a shed or a run-down caravan, and back to the pub to pick up messages from people we'd missed.

Finally out writing again after three months. It's been an exciting adventure meantime, learned lots, done things, had fun, but now it is over and nothing is lost.

I learned last week that my request to defer my MA module has been agreed - start date some time in July, perfect timing.

Five years consultancy arrived on Wednesday, perfect timing to pay for my five years art training plan. I spoke to the tutor for the foundation Textiles course and my portfolio is in train for the entry interview.

This afternoon I will be moving the art cupboard, empty, clean, move, refill. Find the bits I need in the process. I decided a spiral bound sketch book would be best for visiting exhibitions. You can turn it flat on itself.

There's some enthusiasm in the Art History group to visit the Gwen John exhibition in Cardiff, so that is not lost either. Julia, Chris and Nicki are interested in going. More fun with friends.

Quizzed ChatGPT about my HIVE plans this morning and got some surprising and robust answers - another post in due course. But I think my original ideas still hold good:

presence one-to-one
postcard with QR code to niche blog
landing page with value proposition
easy access to voting/commenting - (I must follow up with ecoinstant).

The blogs and postcards are in place, with the meta conversation on this blog.

Maybe a mistake to start thinking about the portfolio with a piece that didn't work. I need ten pieces, maybe one finished, the others can be samples, experiments, what was rejected and why. They want a sense of your visual style. And also that you show up to the Autumn term which is about trying lots of different media and techniques. Term 2 has three assignments - machine knitting, screen printing and a wearable constructed hat. The final term is your own brief. I might continue what I've started with On Rain Before the Code, or I might start the Christopher Marlowe project.

On the other hand, I may leave that for the MFA at Goldsmiths, assuming I get a place. You can download the specification and entry requirements and start building towards it.

I have decided with the house to bundle three things together:

upstairs electrics (and garage)
back bedroom including oriel bay
rain downpipe and back porch replacement

and outsource them to Harbots, who did the downstairs. Less worry for me, even at slightly higher cost. I'll phone the architect later, I'm sure he'll help me.

Then Leicester Windows to replace the front window - I need to find the plan that the architect did for me. That's a self-contained job that shouldn't take too long.

I must get to the travel agents, (more outsourcing) and book the flight and hotel for Alicante Hive Creator Days.

Such a beautiful day today, mild, alternating between sun and threatening rain (no actual rain), London Road was silent and empty at two o clock, the trees all in bud waiting to burst.

I was late, of course, or I would have taken a picture. Unusually, I was spotted and told off.

A side project emerging is the process of film-making. I had considered long ago in a break when I was working one day a week, but then the bookshop came along and closed over that little emergence. But now it's come back, another outcome of that episode I'm grateful for. Ideas for two film treatments and a short story so far, plus the original fantasy Overheard on a Salt Marsh that I wrote for The Ink Well.

These two recent ones I've been thinking about in Jungian/Shakespearean terms. Epic stories of tragedy, or rather the fundamental premise is an epic tragedy, but played out very ordinarily. Listening to a podcast last night I was wondering about MacGuffins and whether I could squeeze one in. Preparedwombat has been writing some good noir flash fiction, perhaps I could cobble some together in a collaboration?

But consider the source.

When a warlord builds a school in the village he occupies, is he a philanthropist? Or is he buying silence?

The ledger shows that for every dollar given to the poor, ten dollars are moved between shell companies (gpwallets). For every memo about "feeding children," there is a silent transfer of thousands of HIVE to @logic to fund the bots that downvote dissenters.
