New flower beds

Fake birdhouse

We have a bed in the front of our house that we want to redo but it has some flowers growing in it now we don't want to lose. I decided to make some new beds and transplant out the current flowers. But first here's some nice pictures 🙂

Morning at the lake

Before I started the project, we took our morning walk.

Coneflowers

The coneflowers along the drive are holding up nicely.

More coneflowers

These were all eaten down by deer last year. They rebounded nicely.

Green grass

We are having a great stretch of cool temperatures and rain. The grass is gorgeous this time of year.

Gate

Here's the new flower beds. I put one on each side of the garden gate.

Right

I've done beds like this several times and can do it pretty quickly. First go out in the woods and find some wood I've previously cut up that is all about the same diameter.

Right with sticks

Then I clear the ground and put down some cardboard. I add some sticks then top with soil. I should add wood then a green layer like grass clippings then soil to actually do Hugelkultur correctly. But the bed isn't that deep.

Right with soil

I didn't fill it too full because I will bring over some soil with the flowers I transplant.

Left

Same thing other side. Sorry I should have taken more pictures but the mosquitos were out and it was hot. Not really hot but I was wearing long sleeves to combat the mosquitos.

Left with sticks

Almost all of our garden and many of our flower beds are done this way. The soil here is rocky and acidic.

Left done

You can improve the soil over time and with alot of work. This is kind of a short cut and gives your more control and quick results. We do plant a few things directly in the soil like raspberries and blueberries. Also peas and green beans. The green beans growing on the fence above the other new bed are planted in the ground directly.
