The moon's surface is covered with volcanoes, and impact craters, and also lava flows, scientists thought the dark patches of the moon could of been oceans, so named features of the Moon mare, which is Latin means "seas” this is why they are called Mare Tranquillitatis (Latin for Sea of Tranquility). And Mare Crisium (the "Sea of Crises") and many more.
