Brave Browser + BasicAttentionToken (BAT) = Brave Payments

bravebat.jpg
In my previous post I explained the advantages of using the “Brave” browser. I did plan to make a separate post on role of BasicAttentionToken with Brave browser. So this post is dedicated to integration of BasicAttentionToken within Brave browser and its use.

Before we start let’s see what a BasicAttentionToken is?

Basic Attention Token is a utility token based on the Ethereum technology that can also be used as a unit of account between advertisers, publishers, and users in our new, blockchain-based digital advertising and services platform. The tokens are not refundable and are not intended to be a digital currency, security, commodity or any other kind of financial instrument. This token is often known by its ticker which is “BAT”. BAT is an ERC20 token, and can be stored in ERC20 compatible wallets.

Now let’s see the purpose behind BAT token and payments through Brave:

Brave Payments is BAT-based publisher contribution system that anonymously and automatically supports your favorite websites, while remaining untracked by anyone, including the people at Brave Software.
The utility token is for conducting transactions and obtaining services on the platform.
Brave currently runs an experimental automated and anonymous micro-donation system for publishers called Brave Payments. The BAT platform will absorb the Brave Payments ledger, which will migrate from Bitcoin micro-payments to BAT micro-donations in the near future. The platform will further extend this work into advertising. Users have the choice of whether or not to opt-in to see ads, which use a separate open source component. When users opt-in to receive ads in the platform, ads will be privately matched to their interests and anonymously confirmed.
Publishers are rewarded accordingly with tokens. The user remains anonymous to all parties. Users who opt-in will also get a share of BATs and can use them on premium products, donate them back to publishers, etc.

How to start using Brave Payments?
You can start using Brave Payments by setting up a wallet within the Brave browser. Check the following images to visualize it better;

In Brave browser, Go to Settings=>Payments

Now turn ON the Brave Payments

Currently as of now, you can qualify for some free tokens to experiment with. Once you turn ON the Brave payments you would see a button "Claim free tokens". Do claim these. The next screen you would see is the following;

How it works?
The Brave browser anonymously monitors user attention, then rewards publishers accordingly with BATs.

Users viewing ads will be rewarded with BATs. BATs can be used for premium content or services on the Brave platform. Attention is measured as users view ads and content in the browser’s active tab in real time.
Publishers will, as part of this service, receive the lion’s share of the total ad revenue. It's anticipated that users will also donate back some tokens to publishers, further increasing their revenue.

Decentralizing advertising sector is a major step which could shake the industry giants like Google and others. It gives power back to ordinary people to earn from the ads and does stop the unnecessary exploitation of this industry.
