I Thought There Was a Corpse Near the House

Hello everyone, hope all of you are doing great today. It has been quite some time since this happened, but every time I think about it, I still find it funny. This happened a few months ago when I went back to my hometown to spend some time with my family.

Everything was normal until one morning I noticed a strange smell around the front area of my father's house. At first it wasn't too strong, so I didn't really pay much attention. I thought maybe someone forgot to throw away the rubbish or perhaps something nearby was causing the smell.

The next day, the smell became much worse.

It was so bad that I honestly thought there must be a dead animal somewhere around the house. Maybe a mouse, a cat, or even a dog. The smell was exactly like something had died. Every time I walked out to the front yard, the rotten smell would hit my nose immediately.

To be honest, I started searching around the house. I checked under the bushes, behind some old flower pots, near the drain, and even around the wooden storage area. I was almost certain I would find a dead animal hiding somewhere.

But after checking everywhere, I still found absolutely nothing.

That made me even more confused.

For another day or two, the smell was still there. Every time I stepped outside, I kept thinking, "Where is the smell coming from?" It was starting to annoy me because I couldn't find the source no matter how many times I looked around.

Then one afternoon, my father saw me walking around the yard again.

He smiled and asked, "Are you still looking for the smell?"

I replied, "Yes. I think something died around the house, but I cannot find it."

He laughed and told me to follow him.

Instead of bringing me to a dead animal, he stopped beside one corner of the front yard and pointed at a very strange looking flower.

I was completely speechless.

The flower looked nothing like the flowers I usually see. It had a huge dark maroon opening with a thick wrinkled centre that almost looked like a giant mushroom. Honestly, my first thought was that it looked more like a fungus than a flower. It was one of the strangest plants I had ever seen in real life.

Of course, I quickly took out my phone and snapped a few photos because I had never seen anything like it before.

My father explained that this flower only blooms for a short time, and during those few days it produces a terrible smell on purpose. The smell attracts flies and beetles, which help pollinate the flower before it slowly dies back.

Later, I searched for more information and found out that it belongs to the Amorphophallus genus, a group of plants that many people call the "corpse flower" because its smell is similar to rotting meat. That was the answer to the mystery. There was never a dead animal near the house at all. It was just this unusual flower doing exactly what nature designed it to do.

Looking back now, the whole experience makes me laugh. I spent several days thinking there was a corpse or a dead animal somewhere around the house, when the real culprit was a flower sitting quietly in the garden.

Nature never stops surprising us. We always imagine flowers should smell sweet and look beautiful, but this one chooses the complete opposite. Even though the smell was horrible, I have to admit it is one of the rarest and most fascinating plants I have ever seen.
