13 July 2026 @marinnewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 3163: Is That The Golden Ring.

This is my post on #freewriters3163 #dailyprompt is that the golden ring hosted by @marinnewest's.
Ubong stood outside the small jewelry stall at Itam market, turning something small and gold between his fingers. The evening light was fading fast, the way it does during harmattan, and the dust hung low over the road.
"Ediye, come and see this," he called out.
Ediye walked over, wiping her hands on her wrapper. She had just finished selling the last of her afang soup ingredients for the day. "See what?"
He opened his palm. Two rings sat there, plain and gold, catching the last bit of sun.
"Is that a golden ring?" she asked, laughing a little, though her voice caught somewhere between disbelief and hope.
"Two rings," Ubong said. "One for you, one for me."
For a moment neither of them spoke. The market noise around them — traders calling out prices, a radio playing highlife somewhere — seemed to fade.
"You've been saving for this," Ediye said. It wasn't a question. She knew how long he'd been setting aside small amounts from his teaching salary, quietly, without complaint.
"Since March," he admitted. "I wanted to do it properly. No shakara, no big grammar. Just... will you?"
Ediye looked at the rings, then at him. "Ubong, you have always known my answer."
He slid the ring onto her finger right there, under the darkening Uyo sky.
