Mr. Darlington had built his reputation on precision. As the head accountant at a modest trading firm in Uyo, his ledgers were said to be flawless — until the day Mrs. Esther, the new auditor from Lagos, arrived to review the books.
She noticed it first in the fuel receipts: dates that didn't match delivery logs, figures rounded a little too conveniently. When she raised the discrepancy, Mr. Darlington waved it off with practiced charm.
"Just clerical errors, Mrs. Esther. Nothing to trouble yourself with."
But Mrs. Esther had not built her career trusting charm over numbers. She traced the entries back three months and found what she suspected — invoices altered to falsify expenses, inflating costs so the difference could quietly disappear into a private account.
She could have gone straight to the board. Instead, she sat across from him one evening, laid the documents on the table, and asked simply, "Why?"
He didn't lie this time. His daughter's hospital bills in Calabar had piled up faster than his salary could cover. He'd told himself it was borrowing, not stealing — a story he'd repeated until he almost believed it.
Mrs. Esther didn't excuse it, but she didn't crush him either. "The truth costs less than this will," she said. "Come with me to the board tomorrow. Tell them yourself."
He did. The company let him repay the sum in installments and kept him on, watched but forgiven.
Walking out of that meeting, Mr. Darlington understood something he hadn't before: falsifying a record only postpones a reckoning — it never cancels it.
