Pulleys and gears

Pulleys and gears are wheels ready to transmit movement, and are counted among the oldest machines invented by man. In the Middle Ages a system of wooden gears was used to transmit movement in windmills, flour mills and mines. the pulleys were probably already known in the ninth century, and Arquimedes demonstrated the effectiveness of compound pulleys.
