Behold, A Language Study Blog
After years of trying to balance my creative work with my studies, I think I've finally found a sweet spot. I am thinking of reviving this blog as part of my studies.
It's really hard to study when you are teaching, making music, podcasts, novels and blogging on top of that, but by trying to blend and overlap some of these things, it gets easier and easier.
Here is what my study routine looks like and I've been good with it for the past month and a half:
Every night before I go to sleep, I watch media in Japanese for about 15-30 minutes, 10-30 seconds at a time dissecting and repeating each line and studying the new vocabulary. I have a vocabulary list that a check a few times a day.
I live in Japan so it's important for me to study Japanese but I also want to study other languages, and the balance between these two can be very challenging, especially with everything else going on. So my nights are for Japanese and my mornings are for another language I am currently exploring.
When I wake up, I set aside 15-30 minutes for studying another language of choice. Right now I'm focused on Indonesian again.
I will probably be focused on Indonesian until I feel like I can hold a conversation about interesting topics (I'm guessing 6-12 months), and then I am going to get back to Cantonese, and then Swahili. From there I have a list of European languages, Indian and African languages I'm interested in, but let's focus on Indonesian for now.
I hope to make this account a place where I practice writing diaries and stories in my target languages. It'll just be a short few sentences, maybe 2-4 times a week, but I hope it can help me remember the words I've been studying.
I'm excited to get back to this account because it's just been sitting there and I have so many topics I want to talk about but if I'm typing in other languages, that's really not going to target the same people. I hope to engage more with Indonesian users and Japanese users for the time being and getting more active in their communities, in the future connecting with many local communities again. It's been a while!

masuk - to enter
keluar - to exit
pulang - to go home
mengganti - change
berharap - to hope
bekerja - to work
berkembang - to progress
berjalan - to walk
berhenti - to stop
Bahasa Jepang saya berhenti berkembang (My Japanese stopped progressing)
Saya tidak mau mengganti kamu (I don't want to change you)
Saya berharap dia suka saya. (I hope she likes me)
Dia berhenti bekerja dan pulang. (He stopped working and went home)

I know it’s for verbs. I think it’s intransitive verbs although I don’t understand the complexities and how nouns/verbs overlap yet!

Japanese? I assume you already know how to speak or hold conversations in this language. Or are you planning to write a book in Japanese? I wish I could find the time to learn a language. Your schedule of devoting few minutes every day to learning these languages is brilliant. I'll try it sometime when I'm ready to learn French and maybe Mandarin. 😁
You should learn to speak Yoruba. Its a cool African language and very easy to learn (not saying so because I speak it). 😅 I was surprised to read a post on this account. Its great to use it for practicing your target languages! I hope you are doing great. Good luck.
Wow, this is a creative way to master your target language. I started Arab some months ago on duolingo but I eventually stopped because I couldn't find means to blend the learning with academic and personal stuff.
I speak Japanese alright but my listening and reading is weak! Not enough vocab. So I’m still going. Not gonna write a book in Japanese but I’d like to translate my writing to Japanese some day). Maybe I’ll share it here first 😆
Some people call this Kaizen which is apparently a Japanese method of study though I haven’t heard about it from Japanese people only westerners.
Do you speak Yoruba? I was gonna learn Igbo when I learned many hive friends are Igbo but it seems most hivesters don’t really speak it. If you speak Yoruba I will put it on my list!!

Ahhh cool! Ok, it’s on the list….not super high cause most people in the city speak English but is love to have some simple conversations in Yoruba Igbo and Hausa! So many languages lololol

That is one of the few phrases I remember from living in Okinawa. It all seems perishable I guess if you don't practice it.

I do! I rest a lot! I just don't have much of a social life at the moment. When I have more of a social life you'll probably see me just posting sloppy videos of songs I wrote hahaha
Mengganti can mean replace, substitute, change and they are used interchangeably.
If you don't want to change someone's behavior then " Aku tidak mau mengubah kamu"
If you want to replace like someone's shift or like their position in whatever relationship then (saya tidak mau mengganti"kan" kamu) makes more sense.
More examples
1 Saya tidak mau mengganti baju saya (I don't want to change my clothes)
2. Saya tidak mau mengubah penampilan saya (I don't want to change my appearance )
Another thing is when you say dia, it can mean (he, she, it) but at schools we were taught like he - dia laki laki, she= dia perempuan, it =benda/objek.
Otherwise if you just say dia without specifying the person or providing the English translation, then we just assume they are either he/she.
Saya berharap dia suka saya. (I hope she likes me)
Dia berhenti bekerja dan pulang. (He stopped working and went home)
